distribution from European mountains Alps, Pyrenees, and S-Europe to W-Asia / ca. 0,2 m high but sometimes more than 1 m across / prefers alkaline soils on mountain meadows / evergreen / scented / orange fruits
Subsp. arbusculoides occurs from Hungary to Jugoslavia / has a more upright growth (~0,3 m tall) and revolute leave margins / prefers acid soil
Red flowering variants are: ‘Pygmaea’, ‘Pygmaea Czech Song’, ‘Variegata’, ‘Argentea’, ‘Sweet Rock’ (‘Variegata Zuckerstein’), ‘Verlotii’, ‘Major’, ‘Eximia’, ‘Ruby Glow’, ‘Velky Kosir’, ‘Typ Augsburg’, ‘Praha’, ‘Blackthorn Triumph’, ‘Puszta’, ‘Benaco’, ‘Peggy Fell’, ‘Klaus Patzner’, ‘Lac de Gloriettes’, ‘Ewesley’, ‘Thorenc’,

Daphne ‘Leila Haines’ is still mentioned as a hybrid of Daphne cneorum with Daphne striata but some years ago Daphne ‘Leila Haines’ was classified into Daphne cneorum by C.D. Brickell and R. White
