distribution from southeastern Europe to the Caucasus region / about 0,8 m tall and more than 1 m in diameter / growing in the woods or on bushy slopes / evergreen / scented, especially when evening comes / hardy / always very rich flowering and fruit set
Daphne pontica subsp. pontica should have black fruits (never cultivated this subspecies). Daphne pontica subsp. haematocarpa synonym Daphne albowiana has red to maroon coloured fruits. The latter one is widely grown. Thrives well also on sunny places with a more compact habit. Daphne pontica ‘Variegata’ see pictures below.
A Daphne pontica hybrid is existing. This hybrid grows in normal loamy garden soil without any drainage.
