Daphne odora Thunberg (1783)

 

distributed in China , Taiwan, S-Vietnam, E-Cambodia / height up to 2 m but often only 1 m and also wide / evergreen / wonderful fragrance / in forested areas and between bushy vegetation / prefers slight shade / neutral, humus rich soil / variegated forms of Daphne odora seem to be hardier - they do not need winter protection but prefer a secluded place in the garden  /

 

since one thousand years Daphne odora, the winter daphne is cultivated in Chinese gardens, now this daphne species is very popular in Japan and more and more selections are available of flower colours and especially with the coloured leaves, selected forms are ‘Variegata’, ‘Aureomarginata’, ‘Lime Light’, ‘Mae Jima’, ‘Forde Abby’, ‘Rubra Variegata’, ‘Double Cream’,and alba forms - ’Sakiwaka’, ‘Leucanthe’, ‘Alba’

 

It is believed that Daphne x hybrida is a cross of Daphne odora and Daphne sericea ‘collina’.
